Dompu, June 5, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company operating under a 7th Generation Contract of Work (CoW), joined the commemoration of World Environment Day through environmental greening and plastic waste reduction programs. These initiatives align with the national theme adopted for the mineral and coal mining subsector: “Plant More Trees and Stop Plastic Pollution.” STM collaborated with its partners to create a positive impact as part of this annual United Nations (UN)-initiated event held every June 5.

Through its Sustainability Department, STM continues to enhance environmental rehabilitation in its former exploration areas. In addition to fulfilling regulatory compliance, reforestation reflects the company’s commitment to long-term environmental preservation. One testament to STM’s dedication is its achievement in 2024, when it exceeded its annual reclamation target by approximately 43.3%. Areas that have not yet been reclaimed are still in use for exploration facilities.

STM has also earned the ISO 14001:2015 certification for environmental management, underscoring its commitment to sustainable mining practices even during the exploration phase. This certification was issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI), an international certification body. During the certification process, STM was assessed on several key aspects, including its understanding of environmental management systems, comprehensive planning, and effective operations.

In parallel, STM conducted a plastic waste reduction campaign through educational and environmental cleanup activities in Dompu Regency and Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). These activities included a World Environment Day seminar with Muhammadiyah University of Mataram (UMMAT), the Sustainability Goes to School program at SDN 12 Hu’u, and a Clean the Ocean event with local residents at Jala Beach. These initiatives also align with the 2025 global World Environment Day theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the waste generated in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province in 2024 reached 626,286 tons. Of this total, 20.11 percent—or approximately 125,893 tons—was plastic waste. Unlike organic waste, plastic waste is extremely difficult to decompose. If not properly managed, it has the potential to contaminate water and soil, leading to health problems.

STM’s Sustainability Advisor, Ratri Auliandari, emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and therefore cross-sector collaboration is essential. She expressed hope that STM’s joint efforts with its partners will lead to a positive impact in the future.
“We hope that these educational and cleanup activities will encourage participants to become more mindful in their use of plastic and manage their waste responsibly,” she stated on Thursday (5/6).

Professor Joni Safaat Adiansyah, Ph.D., Head of the Center for Environmental Studies and Disaster Mitigation (PSLHMB) at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram (UMMAT), welcomed the collaboration with STM, which included a sustainable environment seminar attended by more than 140 participants. He noted that this event served as a reminder of the importance of environmental preservation. “By protecting the environment, we create benefits not only for humans but also for nature,” he said. Professor Joni was also one of the speakers at the seminar held in the UMMAT Rectorate Hall on Monday (2/6).

Meanwhile, the Principal of SDN 12 Hu’u, M. Said, S.Pd., expressed his appreciation to STM for holding the Sustainability Goes to School program at his school. The event included crafting workshops using plastic waste and environmental education. He noted that thanks to STM’s ongoing support, SDN 12 Hu’u was successfully designated as an Adiwiyata School—a title awarded to schools that are environmentally conscious and support sustainable development.
“STM’s programs are both educational and enjoyable for our students,” he said on Tuesday (3/6).

On another front, Jala Village Head, Sadam Husain, voiced his strong support for the beach cleanup program in collaboration with STM. Around 70 participants took part in the activity and managed to collect 200 kilograms of plastic waste. This initiative not only made the area cleaner and more comfortable but also helped prevent various diseases that can arise from waste accumulation. “STM has consistently shown its concern and inspired residents to maintain environmental cleanliness,” he said on Wednesday (4/6), while participating in the beach cleanup.
