  • PT Sumbawa Timur Mining Highlights the Important Role of Exploration in Critical Mineral Resilience at the Minerba Convex 2025

Jakarta, October 16, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company holding a 7th Generation Contract of Work, shared insights on critical mineral exploration at the Mineral & Coal Convention–Expo (Minerba Convex) 2025. The event, held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC), was organized by the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) as a forum for exchanging innovations and opening up investment opportunities in the Indonesian mining sector.

STM President Director, Bede Evans, was one of the speakers at the discussion session themed “Critical & Strategic Minerals to Strengthen National Industrialization.” In addition to Bede Evans, there were other speakers, namely the Division Head of Downstream Strategy, Research, and Process Engineering MIND ID, Muhidin; Deputy Chair of Data and Information of the Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), Puryanto; and Indonesian Advanced Materials Expert Koesnohadi Kuncoro. This discussion was also attended by experts from relevant ministries and institutions as respondents, as well as the general public.

Critical minerals, the main topic of discussion, are minerals that play a vital role in the national economy, strategic technology, and the global energy transition. However, these minerals are vulnerable in terms of supply availability. According to the discussion moderator, Resvani, who also serves as Chair of the Minerba Convex 2025 Implementing Committee, cross-sector collaboration is needed in the development of critical minerals to increase competitiveness on the global stage.

“Critical mineral exploration is not easy. The process requires significant investment, is often located in difficul locations, and faces various technical and non-technical challenges. We need strong collaboration, research development, and human resource capacity development,” said Resvani, who is also Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi).

Copper is a critical mineral and a key component of global energy transition plans. However, according to a 2022 study by S&P Global, the gap between copper supply and demand is expected to be significant by 2035—doubling compared to 2022. Substitution and recycling will not be sufficient to meet the needs of electric vehicles, electricity infrastructure, and renewable energy generation.

In his presentation, Bede Evans also stated that the demand for the critical mineral copper continues to increase both nationally and globally. “As a Company, Sumbawa Timur Mining is ready to meet the requirement through the development of the Hu’u Project. This copper exploration project is home to the Onto Deposit, the largest deposit discovered in the last 15 years, with a future production capacity estimated at 24 Mtpa in Lift 1 and 48 Mtpa in Lift 2,” he said.

Bede also explained that STM’s approach to becoming a world-class copper mining company encompasses several strategies, including the integration of science and technology, cross-sector collaboration, and a commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values. “To realize a company that can contribute optimally and sustainably, we will also utilize the potential of geothermal energy to support the low-carbon energy needs of our activities,” he explained.

Bede believes that each stakeholder has a crucial role to play in developing Indonesia’s critical minerals sector. He also believes that STM’s role as part of the industry is to invest in appropriate technology and methodology, adhere to transparency principles and international standards to ensure recognition of exploration results in the global market, and commit to social and environmental responsibility.

“Through aligned policies, research collaboration, the application of advanced technology, and strong human resource capacity, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to become a global leader in critical mineral exploration. STM is committed to participating in national efforts to strengthen the critical mineral supply chain through world-class, collaborative, and sustainability-oriented exploration,” he concluded.

This year’s Minerba Convex attracted over six thousand visitors from diverse backgrounds, including businesspeople, government officials, academics, associations, and the general public. In addition to thematic discussions, Minerba Convex 2025 also featured a variety of engaging booths, a forum for assistance with compliance with mining regulations, and a Mining Kids Adventure, a fun way for children to learn about the world of mining.

PT STM Supports the Success of MotoGP Mandalika 2025 by Providing Helicopter for Air Transport and Medical Evacuation Services

Mataram, October 7, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company holding a 7th Generation Contract of Work, supported the success of the MotoGP Mandalika 2025 by providing one unit of helicopter as a facility for air transport and medical evacuation. The helicopter was stationed around the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, from the preparation period through the MotoGP event held on October 3–5, 2025.

MotoGP is the premier class of motorcycle racing world championship organized by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and promoted by Dorna Sports. MotoGP has been held in various countries. Indonesia first hosted MotoGP in 1996–1997 at the Sentul Circuit, West Java Province. After a 25-year hiatus, Indonesia regained the honor of hosting MotoGP in 2022 to the present, held at the Mandalika Circuit.

In addition to serving as an air transport facility, the helicopter is also a vital part of safety and medical protocols in international sporting events, including MotoGP. This facility is one of the main requirements that must be fulfilled by the organizers. The availability of a helicopter strengthens emergency health services for racers, crew members, and visitors who require prompt treatment and medical evacuation.

The Governor of NTB, Dr. Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, expressed his appreciation for STM’s support. “We warmly welcome the support of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining in ensuring the success of MotoGP Mandalika 2025. This helicopter is used for air transport and medical evacuation needs if required, thereby enhancing NTB’s readiness to host international events with high safety standards,” said the Governor on Monday (6/10).

He added that the support represents a good synergy between the industrial sector and the government. “This is a concrete example of how the industrial sector in NTB and we, the Provincial Government, can support each other for regional growth. MotoGP Mandalika is a major agenda with great potential to boost the local economy, therefore cross-sector synergy is important to maintain,” he said.

STM Principal Communications, Cindy Elza, expressed her gratitude to the Governor of NTB for the opportunity given. “We are grateful and proud of the opportunity given by the Governor, allowing STM to be directly involved in the success of MotoGP Mandalika 2025. We also congratulate the NTB Provincial Government and all parties involved for the success of this event,” she said.

STM’s support for MotoGP Mandalika, Cindy continued, aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to develop NTB’s economy, where STM operates. “This support is one form of our participation in regional economic development, in addition to the programs we carry out in Dompu Regency, our operational area. This support also aligns with STM’s core value, Life Matters Most, so we are pleased to provide our facilities and expertise to help realize a safe and successful MotoGP Mandalika,” she said.

Village Participation Program of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining Wins CSR & PDB Awards 2025

Jakarta, September 30, 2025 – The Village Participation Program (PPD) initiated by PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) successfully received the Silver category award at the 2025 Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Village Development (CSR & PDB) Awards. This award was organized by the Indonesian Social Sustainability Forum (ISSF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions.

The CSR & PDB Awards is a recognition event for companies that have contributed to accelerating village and disadvantaged region development through innovative and collaborative programs. This year, the CSR & PDB Awards ceremony was held at Hotel Bidakara Jakarta on Tuesday (30/9), and was attended by the Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions H. Yandri Susanto, S.Pt., M.Pd., the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Dr. (H.C.) H. Zulkifli Hasan, S.E., M.M., other ministry officials, and several regional heads.

Chairman of ISSF, Dr. Sudarmanto, AAK., expressed his appreciation to the award recipients who have contributed to creating social sustainability. “The CSR and PDB Awards activities have impacted economic development in 431 villages. Today we are proud that corporations are contributing to transforming disadvantaged villages into developing ones, then into advanced and independent villages,” said Sudarmanto in his speech.

He also explained that there has been an increase in the number of villages being assisted since the award program was first held in 2022, which at that time involved 93 villages. According to Sudarmanto, this award program aligns with Presidential Asta Cita number 6, which is to build from the village and from the grassroots for economic equity and poverty eradication.

The effectiveness of PPD in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, enabled STM to become one of the winners of the 2025 CSR & PDB Awards. PPD, which has been running since 2017, is STM’s form of support for the Village Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMDes) established through village deliberations. In 2024, the budget allocated for PPD amounted to approximately IDR 1.83 billion, focusing on health, economy, and education sectors.

STM’s Senior Community Relations Analyst, Vovia Witni, explained that PPD is implemented in 8 villages in Hu’u District and 2 villages in Pajo District, Dompu Regency. “Each village has its own priority program determined through village deliberations. In Cempi Jaya Village, for example, last year they agreed to use PPD funds to improve posyandu facilities, revitalize early childhood education (PAUD), procure public toilets, and construct retaining walls,” said Witni.

Witni stated that through PPD, STM is present to support various community needs around the company’s operational area so that they can grow together. “We are here to support various community needs, always involving the local government as a form of collaboration and transparency. All PPD implementations are carried out by professional work partners agreed upon together,” said Witni after receiving the 2025 CSR & PDB Awards, which was directly presented by the Expert Staff for Strategic Planning at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jisman P. Hutajulu.

PPD is part of STM’s integrated community development and empowerment program (PPM) around the Hu’u Project area, a copper exploration project managed by STM. This program also received the Top CSR Awards in the 4-Star category in June 2025 for its contribution to social development. In addition to PPD, STM also has several flagship programs such as the Education Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP), Achievement Scholarship Program, MSME Development Program, Community Sanitation Program, and other programs that continue to be developed according to the potential and needs around the company’s operational area.

“We are proud that STM’s PPD was selected as one of the winners of the 2025 CSR & PDB Awards. This achievement is inseparable from solid teamwork, supportive company management, and support from various other parties. We thank everyone for their support and hope this award will motivate us to create the best and most sustainable contributions for the community,” Witni concluded.

Head of Adu Village, Alwi H. Arsyad, whose village is one of the PPD recipients from STM, said that this annual program greatly helps the community in meeting priority needs. “STM’s support through PPD is very beneficial for village development and helps the people of Adu Village. On behalf of the Adu community, I express my deepest gratitude to STM,” he said during the PPD program evaluation in Adu Village, Thursday (18/9).

In the 2025 PPD, the people of Adu Village planned a health program consisting of sports field improvements, family latrines, and equipping the village maternity clinic (polindes) with medical equipment. In the economic sector, they plan to procure agricultural tools such as hand tractors and sprayers. Meanwhile, in the education sector, they will improve facilities and infrastructure for early childhood education (PAUD) and Qur’an education parks (TPQ), as well as procure marawis instruments.

From Lima Puluh Kota to Geneva: Vovia Witni’s Journey to Empower Communities

“I raise up my voice not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard.” — Malala Yousafzai, human rights activist from Pakistan.

Being born in a small village did not limit Vovia Witni from weaving big dreams. Since elementary school, the woman from Jopang Manganti Village, Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra Province, has aspired to grow into a driver of social empowerment. That hope was inspired by books and newspapers she read from an early age, as well as her concern for the surrounding environment. Among various life philosophies, Witni chose usefulness to others as her path of service.

Witni, affectionately called Sambogo by her father, was raised in a modest family that understood well the importance of education. Her father always ensured that his children were familiar with literacy, as a provision for navigating the twists and turns of life. At school, Witni consistently ranked among the top students. Upon entering Senior High School (SMA), she was accepted into an elite class with a full scholarship.

Witni once wished to pursue higher education in Java, but economic limitations led her to study in Aceh Province. Her passion for education and social fields once made her consider becoming a lecturer. However, fate said otherwise. Her life plans changed when a major tsunami struck Aceh in 2004. The disaster became a turning point that introduced her to the world of social and humanitarian work.

After the tsunami hit, Witni followed her heart’s calling to join an international humanitarian organization focused on post-disaster recovery. She was assigned to Nias as part of the public sanitation team. She worked to improve the quality of life of the community through the revitalization of basic facilities closely related to health. She enjoyed this social activity and felt that what she was doing was not merely formal work, but a humanitarian service.

Her spirit of social empowerment led Witni to her next career journey. She joined an oil and gas company in West Sulawesi, entrusted with designing community development programs. One of the most memorable for her was when she established a community library in a remote village. The program became a window for village children to explore the world through books. Some of them have now become teachers, lecturers, and entrepreneurs.

Witni also joined a nonprofit organization focused on supporting the needs of children, especially in remote areas. She learned many new things and implemented her knowledge for a better society. Finally, in 2024, Witni became part of the Community Development team at PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM). She joined a company that shares the same values as she does: Support Others and Be Supported.

    Equality in Action

In her daily work at STM, Witni sees and feels that equality between women and men has been well implemented. She is grateful to be in a work environment that provides equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender. “I appreciate that at STM there is no difference in treatment between women and men. Mr. Ulya, my manager, is also open-minded and does not discriminate just because I am a woman,” she said.

As a woman who helps determine the direction of community development programs at STM, Witni wants to make a more meaningful contribution. She wants to ensure that the programs implemented carry strong gender equality values, providing space for women to grow and be empowered. She believes that empowered women can become driving forces for community empowerment in various fields.

“I want the community development programs in Hu’u, Dompu, to carry gender equality values. We’ll start gradually, from education to training, so that women here have space to grow and contribute. That’s my hope, and I wish it can be realized one step at a time,” she said. Witni added that she is pleased with the company’s support so far for the programs she and her team have planned.

STM’s community empowerment programs, which involve many women, have even received national-level awards. Some of the most recent include the Gold Award at the Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Award (ISDA) 2024 for the Education Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP), the Silver Award at ISDA 2024 for the MSME development program, and the Silver Award at the Indonesian CSR Awards (ICA) 2024 for the organic farming program.

A Voice from the Field at the UN Geneva

Witni’s experience in social empowerment—gained through her work with companies, nonprofit organizations, and partnerships with research institutions and universities—led her to the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva, Switzerland. She had the opportunity to share her perspective at the 8th UNTech Global Dialogue: Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on E-commerce and the Digital Economy, held from May 12–14, 2024.

The main agenda of the meeting was to draft global policy recommendations to be advocated to developed countries and major corporations regarding digital transformation and data-driven economies. The goal was to ensure that the advancement of digital technology is not only enjoyed by developed nations but also provides equal benefits and opportunities for developing and least-developed countries.

Witni attended as one of the panelists, bringing insights from Indonesia, particularly on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects in the critical mineral supply chain—especially copper, which is a key component in the global digital ecosystem. Her presence, supported by research she had developed over the years, offered valuable perspectives, considering Indonesia is one of the core players in the global critical mineral commodities market.

During the discussion session, Witni shared her views based on field experience and research findings. She emphasized the importance of managing critical minerals in developing countries like Indonesia, which must continue to be developed with attention to sustainability and social responsibility. This is crucial to ensure that global digital economic growth does not solely rely on resource extraction, but also delivers added value and sustainable benefits to the supplying countries.

The forum was attended by representatives from various countries, international organizations, academics, and industry practitioners from around the world. All parties exchanged views and experiences, which were then formulated into more inclusive and sustainable global policy recommendations. For Witni, standing and speaking on the UN stage was an unforgettable moment. She recalled the atmosphere of the conference room, which she had only seen on television screens, now becoming the place where she stood to bring the voice of Indonesia.

“That moment made me feel small yet proud. The world is so vast, and there is still so much we can learn from other countries. But at the same time, I realized that Indonesia has many things worth voicing. I’m proud to be a small part of that,” Witni said. She also expressed gratitude for the support she received from those around her, including her team at STM, who consistently supported the efforts she pursued.

    Breaking Limits, Embracing Possibilities

For Witni, her career journey and achievements to this day are rooted in two values she always holds: responsibility and integrity. Every task that comes her way is completed wholeheartedly, never half-heartedly. For her, a sense of responsibility is not just about finishing a job, but also about maintaining self-respect. “If I don’t give my best, I feel ashamed of myself. So, whatever it is, I do it wholeheartedly, as best as I can. If it’s still possible to try, I will try,” she said.

Witni’s courage to keep moving forward is also shaped by her parents’ upbringing. Although she grew up in a modest family with limited financial means, her parents always instilled the importance of education and never restricted her just because she is a woman. That principle shaped her into someone who never hesitates to try. “Fear is always there—fear of failure, fear of making mistakes. But I never limit myself. Because if we try our best, God willing, we can do it,” she said.

Witni has proven that women can contribute meaningfully anywhere, including in the mining industry, which is currently dominated by men. According to Witni, the only difference between men and women is biological. Beyond that, capacity and capability can be developed by anyone who is willing to learn and make an effort. “When it comes to work and skills, everything can be learned. If men can do it, women can too. In fact, often, women can do it even better.

Dompu, July 21, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company managing the Hu’u Project, demonstrated its support for the development of tourism in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB), by contributing to the success of the Lakey Festival. Held from July 12–20, 2025, along Lakey Beach in Hu’u District, the festival drew more than 30.000 visitors.

Lakey Festival showcased breathtaking natural scenery blended with cultural richness, diverse culinary offerings, and various sporting events. Activities included the Lakey Fun Run, mini boat races, a surfing tournament, cultural camps, mass traditional dance performances, and much more. The appearance of special guest Juan Reza, a singer from East Nusa Tenggara known for the hit song Pica-Pica, added to the festive atmosphere.

Festival visitors and participants came not only from Dompu and other parts of NTB, but also from across Indonesia and abroad. For example, in the surfing tournament held from July 15–17, tourists from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, China, South Africa, and the United States competed on Lakey’s unique “left-handed” waves, which break to the left.

Over the nine-day event, the Lakey Festival contributed significantly to the local economy. The Dompu Department of Culture and Tourism estimated that the festival generated around Rp15 billion in economic activity, particularly in the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) sector. One of the festival’s main events, the Ou Balumba dance, even set a national record with the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI), performed by 21.220 dancers, the largest ever recorded in Indonesia.

Dompu Regent Bambang Firdaus expressed special appreciation for STM, one of the festival’s main sponsors. “Sumbawa Timur Mining played a key role in organizing the Lakey Festival, helping to realize what we all envisioned. It was a remarkable success,” he stated amid the celebration.

The Regent also emphasized the need to continue the well-established partnership between the Dompu Regency Government and STM. “This is part of our joint effort to grow the economy and build the Dompu we all love. Once again, thank you to STM and its outstanding management,” he said.

STM’s contribution went beyond sponsorship. The company renovated the Lakey Beach pedestrian path, assisted with festival site preparation using heavy machinery for three days, and provided two garbage trucks and cleaning personnel to help maintain cleanliness.

Abdul Muis, the Head of Dompu’s Department of Culture and Tourism, also praised STM’s support. “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank STM for their incredible contribution, which helped make the Lakey Festival a success,” he said.

STM also empowered its assisted MSME group, the Jara Hu’u MSME Association, to take part in the festival. The group sold a variety of locally made products such as menepela chips, moringa sticks, fish floss, salted peanuts, and assorted traditional cakes. Two of these entrepreneurs were even selected to be part of the festival’s core organizing committee, collaborating with Dompu’s Cooperative and MSME Office to prepare meals for VIP guests.

Ulya Defretes, STM’s Community Relations Manager, said the company’s involvement reflects its commitment to local economic development through both tourism and MSMEs. “We’re proud to have been part of the 2025 Lakey Festival. This event has a broad impact on Dompu, not just in promoting tourism but also in creating opportunities for MSMEs to grow. We hope the positive effects of this festival will continue to benefit the Dompu community long after the event ends,” she said.

The excitement of the Lakey Festival also attracted attention from provincial and national government representatives. Among the attendees were NTB Governor Dr. H. Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, Special Presidential Envoy for Tourism Zita Anjani, and Director of ICT Services at the Ministry of Creative Economy, Dr. H. Abdul Malik, along with several other officials. This multi-level collaboration played a vital role in the success of the festival and further strengthened the spirit of unity in advancing Dompu’s tourism sector.

STM Engages with Press Council to Support Responsible Press Freedom

Jakarta, June 26, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company holding a 7th Generation Contract of Work (CoW), held an audience with the Press Council to express its support for the principle of responsible press freedom. STM sought guidance from the Press Council on how to build communication with the press community in accordance with prevailing laws and ethical codes. Additionally, STM aligned its media development plans in its operational area with the program orientations of the Press Council.

The meeting, held at the Press Council Building in Central Jakarta, was attended by Vice Chairperson of the Press Council and Chair of the Inter-Institutional and Foreign Relations Commission, Totok Suryanto, along with Abdul Manan, Chair of the Legal and Legislation Commission. Representing STM was Principal Communications Cindy Elza, accompanied by several members of her team.

Vice Chairperson Totok Suryanto welcomed STM’s initiative to support the Press Council in fulfilling its mandate. “At the Press Council, we continuously encourage the media to fulfill its role as a public watchdog while upholding journalistic principles and ethics. Media verification is indeed important as an indicator of professionalism, but more crucially, all journalistic products must be based on the journalistic code of ethics,” he explained during the session.

STM’s Principal Communications Officer Cindy Elza expressed her appreciation for the warm reception by the Press Council. “This audience not only gave us the opportunity to build rapport with the new members of the Press Council but also reinforced our commitment to supporting better and more responsible journalistic practices,” said Cindy.

Cindy added that journalistic work can influence public opinion and attitudes. Therefore, sound journalistic practices that adhere to laws and ethical standards must be supported. “We are very concerned about how unverified issues can create negative perceptions about the industry. That is why we believe in the importance of constructive partnerships between industry and the media,” she stated.

In recent years, STM has actively supported the development of quality journalism in its working area in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, through various programs such as writing and photography training, as well as scientific seminars, particularly related to mineral exploration. STM collaborates with journalists, experts, and reputable organizations in carrying out these programs.

The 4-Star category award acknowledges STM’s achievement of an “Very Good” rating for its systems, policies, and implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs that support sustainable business growth. The TOP Leader on CSR Commitment award was presented to STM’s President Director, Bede Evans, in recognition of his strong commitment to building robust systems, good governance, and successful CSR implementation within the company.

To receive these awards, STM first underwent a rigorous evaluation process that included documentation submission, presentations, and a series of assessments by a panel of judges. The panel consisted of academic experts and industry practitioners from a range of organizations, including universities, CSR consultants, media, and industry players. Based on their comprehensive evaluation, the judges declared STM worthy of receiving both awards.

STM’s flagship CSR programs include the Village Participation Program (PPD), Education Quality Improvement Program (EQUIP), merit-based scholarships, MSME development, organic farming, stunting prevention, and basic literacy programs. The 2025 TOP CSR Awards jury highlighted that these initiatives, strongly supported by the company’s leadership, contribute significantly to the Asta Cita and the 17 Priority Programs of the 2024–2029 Merah Putih Cabinet.

The theme of this year’s award was “CSR for Sustainable Business Growth and Asta Cita Government Programs.” According to M. Lutfi Handayani, M.M., M.B.A., Chief Organizer of the 2025 TOP CSR Awards and Editor-in-Chief of Top Business magazine, the theme aims to encourage various stakeholders to jointly support the government’s programs.

“We encourage CSR implementation in companies to align with their business growth strategies so that it supports long-term sustainability. In addition, we hope that CSR programs can make real contributions to national development, especially those aligned with the Asta Cita priority programs,” said Lutfi during the award ceremony held in Jakarta on Wednesday, (11/6).

Lutfi also congratulated STM on its achievement in winning the 4-Star category and the TOP Leader on CSR Commitment award. “The accomplishment of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining is remarkable. Receiving the 4-Star rating shows that the company’s CSR programs are well-aligned with its business strategy,” he said. He added that the company has also adopted the principles of ISO 26000 as a guideline for carrying out its social responsibility efforts.

Ulya Defretes, STM’s Community Relations Manager—whose department oversees community development and empowerment programs—expressed her gratitude to the organizers of the 2025 TOP CSR Awards for their trust in STM. “This award further motivates us to continue making a meaningful impact on the development and empowerment of communities around our operational area in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. We are committed to growing together with the community,” she said.

According to Ulya, STM’s community empowerment programs reached more than 10,960 direct beneficiaries throughout 2024. These beneficiaries were served through several program pillars: economic development, health, education, and infrastructure. “We are thankful to the community and company partners who have been involved in all of our programs. Without their support, these initiatives would not have been successfully implemented,” she added.

The 2025 TOP CSR Awards further affirm STM’s strong commitment to community development and empowerment throughout its exploration journey. Just six months ago, STM also received the Gold Award at the Indonesian SDGs Awards (ISDA) for its EQUIP program, and another Gold Award at the Indonesian CSR Awards (ICA) for its merit-based college scholarship program. At the same time, STM was also named “Most Committed Company in Community Engagement and Development” by the Corporate Forum for CSR Development (CFCD).

STM Distributes 11 Cows to Dompu Community for Eid al-Adha Celebration

Dompu, June 5, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company managing the Hu’u Project, distributed 11 sacrificial cows to communities in Dompu Regency in celebration of Eid al-Adha. This donation also serves as part of the company’s support for public nutrition improvement programs in line with government initiatives.

Nine of the sacrificial animals were allocated to villages in the Hu’u Subdistrict, while the remaining were given to the community of Pajo Subdistrict and to the management of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Dompu. All animals will be slaughtered by local Eid committees at each location and the meat will be distributed to eligible recipients.

Hu’u Village Head, Mujahidin, S.Sos., expressed his appreciation for STM’s support in providing the sacrificial animals. The animal for Hu’u Village is planned to be slaughtered at Al-Falah Mosque in Sigi Hamlet. “Every Eid al-Adha, STM consistently supports us with sacrificial animals. We distribute the meat to those in need. We are truly grateful and appreciative,” said Mujahidin.

As in previous years, STM’s donation is not limited to the Hu’u Subdistrict, which is located near the company’s operational area, but also includes Pajo Subdistrict. While last year’s donation went to the community of Tembalae Village, this year it was the turn of Ranggo Village to receive the support.

“Alhamdulillah, this is the third year Pajo Subdistrict has received sacrificial animals from STM. We are grateful, this shows the company’s care for our community,” said Pajo Subdistrict Head, Imran, SE., after receiving the donation at the Ranggo Village office.

Meanwhile, the sacrificial animal for Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Dompu was symbolically received by mosque representative Abdul Farid. The year 2025 marks the fourth year the mosque has received such a donation from STM. “After the slaughter and meat distribution, we always report back to the donor as a form of accountability,” said Abdul Farid.

STM’s Community Relations representative, Igo Pardede, who was involved in the distribution, stated that this program is part of STM’s ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with the local communities. “We hope the meat is well received and enjoyed by the community, and that it adds warmth to the Eid celebration,” he said.

Greening the Environment and Reducing Plastic Waste: STM’s Way of Commemorating World Environment Day

Dompu, June 5, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company operating under a 7th Generation Contract of Work (CoW), joined the commemoration of World Environment Day through environmental greening and plastic waste reduction programs. These initiatives align with the national theme adopted for the mineral and coal mining subsector: “Plant More Trees and Stop Plastic Pollution.” STM collaborated with its partners to create a positive impact as part of this annual United Nations (UN)-initiated event held every June 5.

Through its Sustainability Department, STM continues to enhance environmental rehabilitation in its former exploration areas. In addition to fulfilling regulatory compliance, reforestation reflects the company’s commitment to long-term environmental preservation. One testament to STM’s dedication is its achievement in 2024, when it exceeded its annual reclamation target by approximately 43.3%. Areas that have not yet been reclaimed are still in use for exploration facilities.

STM has also earned the ISO 14001:2015 certification for environmental management, underscoring its commitment to sustainable mining practices even during the exploration phase. This certification was issued by the British Standards Institution (BSI), an international certification body. During the certification process, STM was assessed on several key aspects, including its understanding of environmental management systems, comprehensive planning, and effective operations.

In parallel, STM conducted a plastic waste reduction campaign through educational and environmental cleanup activities in Dompu Regency and Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). These activities included a World Environment Day seminar with Muhammadiyah University of Mataram (UMMAT), the Sustainability Goes to School program at SDN 12 Hu’u, and a Clean the Ocean event with local residents at Jala Beach. These initiatives also align with the 2025 global World Environment Day theme: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the waste generated in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province in 2024 reached 626,286 tons. Of this total, 20.11 percent—or approximately 125,893 tons—was plastic waste. Unlike organic waste, plastic waste is extremely difficult to decompose. If not properly managed, it has the potential to contaminate water and soil, leading to health problems.

STM’s Sustainability Advisor, Ratri Auliandari, emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and therefore cross-sector collaboration is essential. She expressed hope that STM’s joint efforts with its partners will lead to a positive impact in the future.
“We hope that these educational and cleanup activities will encourage participants to become more mindful in their use of plastic and manage their waste responsibly,” she stated on Thursday (5/6).

Professor Joni Safaat Adiansyah, Ph.D., Head of the Center for Environmental Studies and Disaster Mitigation (PSLHMB) at Muhammadiyah University of Mataram (UMMAT), welcomed the collaboration with STM, which included a sustainable environment seminar attended by more than 140 participants. He noted that this event served as a reminder of the importance of environmental preservation. “By protecting the environment, we create benefits not only for humans but also for nature,” he said. Professor Joni was also one of the speakers at the seminar held in the UMMAT Rectorate Hall on Monday (2/6).

Meanwhile, the Principal of SDN 12 Hu’u, M. Said, S.Pd., expressed his appreciation to STM for holding the Sustainability Goes to School program at his school. The event included crafting workshops using plastic waste and environmental education. He noted that thanks to STM’s ongoing support, SDN 12 Hu’u was successfully designated as an Adiwiyata School—a title awarded to schools that are environmentally conscious and support sustainable development.
“STM’s programs are both educational and enjoyable for our students,” he said on Tuesday (3/6).

On another front, Jala Village Head, Sadam Husain, voiced his strong support for the beach cleanup program in collaboration with STM. Around 70 participants took part in the activity and managed to collect 200 kilograms of plastic waste. This initiative not only made the area cleaner and more comfortable but also helped prevent various diseases that can arise from waste accumulation. “STM has consistently shown its concern and inspired residents to maintain environmental cleanliness,” he said on Wednesday (4/6), while participating in the beach cleanup.

Jakarta, May 24, 2025 — PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company, has been awarded the Bronze Winner at the 2025 Indonesia Digital Media Awards (IDMA) in the category of Best Corporate Social Media. The event is organized by the Indonesian Newspaper Publishers Association (SPS), a prominent media organization with 30 provincial branches and over 600 members. STM received this recognition for its transparency and creativity in sharing company information through social media during its exploration activities in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province.

This year’s IDMA gathered submissions from nearly 200 participants. IDMA is part of the SPS Awards, which this year is being held for the 16th time. SPS Chairman Januar P. Ruswita stated that the SPS Awards aim to encourage creativity among newspapers and other corporations in presenting and distributing information. “Our goal is to spark creativity in how content is presented so it becomes more engaging and relatable to audiences,” he said during the SPS Awards night at the Indonesian Press Council Building in Jakarta.

SPS Executive Director and Chair of the 2025 SPS Awards Organizing Committee, Lila Intana, congratulated STM on its achievement. “Congratulations to Sumbawa Timur Mining for winning the Bronze Award in the Best Corporate Social Media category at the 2025 SPS Awards. We, the committee of the Indonesian Newspaper Publishers Association Awards, hope that STM continues to stay passionate, innovative, and competitive in future events,” said Lila.

Social media is one of the digital channels STM uses to disseminate information. In addition to social media, STM also uses other digital platforms such as its website, intranet, email, and messaging apps. STM regularly produces and distributes content that is relevant, informative, educational, and human-centric. According to the company’s digital media performance report, this approach contributes to generating positive public responses and enhances STM’s visibility in the digital space.

STM’s Principal Communication, Cindy Elza, said that creating digital content and utilizing social media is part of the company’s commitment to information transparency. NTB Provincial Government and Dompu Regional Parliament Observe PT STM’s Sustainable Environmental Management Efforts

Dompu, May 5, 2025 — The Provincial Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) of Dompu Regency conducted a visit to PT Sumbawa Timur Mining’s (STM) copper exploration area in Hu’u District, also known as the Hu’u Project. This joint visit aimed to obtain a clear picture of STM’s environmental management programs within its working area, including water quality monitoring and land reclamation efforts.

The NTB Provincial Government was represented by the Energy and Mineral Resources Office (ESDM) and the Environmental and Forestry Office (LHK), accompanied by the Environmental Office (LH) of Dompu Regency. The Dompu DPRD was represented by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the council, along with seven other members. During the visit, the delegation participated in a discussion session led by STM’s Head of Mining Engineering (KTT), followed by a direct field observation.

During the joint visit, the team reviewed the former drilling point of the Test Pumping Bore Program (TPBP), which tested a method for deep groundwater cooling. The TPBP was previously conducted to ensure that STM’s future underground mining can be carried out safely, as the Onto copper deposit lies 500 meters below the surface and is located near a geothermal system with temperatures ranging from 80 to 110 degrees Celsius.

Near the TPBP area, the visiting guests observed a deep groundwater holding pond that was previously used as one of the test facilities. This pond is still maintained today as it will be used for future testing. STM’s Sustainability Team routinely monitors and maintains the pond to ensure that it meets the applicable regulatory water quality standards.

The Acting Head of the NTB Environmental and Forestry Office, Mursal, S.P., M.Si., stated that STM is a verified company that complies with environmental procedures. He clarified that claims suggesting the TPBP support pond is a mining waste pond are inaccurate. “We have seen with our own eyes that the reports are not true — they do not match the actual facts,” he said.

This statement was reinforced by the Head of Dompu Regency’s Environmental Office, Jufri, ST, M.Si. He noted that STM pays serious attention to the environment around the holding pond. “STM is so cautious about soil contamination that they installed a geomembrane. The geomembrane in this pond prevents water from directly touching the ground. Its function is to prevent water from seeping into the soil — it is held back by the geomembrane,” he explained.

Chairman of the Dompu DPRD, Ir. Muttakun, also provided clarification regarding the circulating issue about an alleged discovery of a mining waste pond in STM’s exploration area.
“We’ve come here, and so far, we see that the pond is not as massive as claimed. This has been clarified,” he stated. According to Muttakun, the pond measures approximately 12×10 meters with a depth of around 1 to 1.5 meters.

“I saw two ponds. The first is a mud pond, and the other is a water pond. Each has a different function. The mud pond is used to collect water (with carried sediment) that comes out during drilling. Meanwhile, the water pond is used as a reserve in case of water loss during the drilling process. So, the water is indeed used to facilitate the drilling process,” Muttakun explained.

Vice Chairman of the Dompu DPRD, Kurnia Ramadhan, S.E., M.E., expressed appreciation for the transparency shown by STM through this visit. “STM is very open in sharing information regarding its exploration activities. This is important for us, the people of Dompu — that we must remain open to anyone who wishes to invest in our region, as long as the investment brings benefits and advantages to the area,” he stated.

STM’s Head of Mining Engineering (KTT), Yan Fuadi, emphasized that environmental conservation is an integral part of STM’s exploration journey. The company continuously strives to ensure that exploration activities coexist harmoniously with nature and surrounding communities. “PT Sumbawa Timur Mining consistently adheres to environmental management procedures and coordinates with the government in fulfilling its obligations,” he stated.

Beyond water monitoring, he also cited sustainable environmental management through land reclamation. “In 2024, STM exceeded its reclamation target by approximately 43.3 percent, successfully reclaiming 11.51 hectares of land compared to the planned 8.03 hectares,” he said. The remaining areas not yet reclaimed, according to Yan Fuadi, are still being used to support ongoing exploration activities and will be reclaimed in accordance with applicable regulations.

To support sustainable environmental management, STM also operates a 0.44-hectare nursery with a capacity of 20,000 ready-to-plant seedlings. The seedlings are dominated by pioneer plant species that accelerate natural succession and support the growth of local plant communities. This nursery is powered by renewable energy sourced from solar panels, reflecting STM’s commitment to emission reduction and environmental sustainability.

Sumbawa Timur Mining Prevents Youth Violence through Student Seminars and Teacher Workshops

Dompu, April 30, 2025 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a copper exploration company managing the Hu’u Project, supports the Dompu Regency Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province in preventing youth violence and creating safe spaces in schools through student seminars and teacher workshops. The week-long series of activities was held at three schools, involving around 600 students and 115 teachers.

Youth violence not only disrupts the learning process but also has the potential to damage students’ social and emotional development. The escalation of youth violence cases may also lead to material losses and even fatalities. Contributing factors include difficulties in emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and building healthy peer relationships.

In response to this situation, STM held student seminars and teacher workshops at SMPN 1 Hu’u, SMAN 1 Hu’u, and SMKN 1 Hu’u as an educational and preventive effort to foster a safe, inclusive, and violence-free school environment. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Kanaka Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission includes improving access to and the quality of education.

The student seminar was themed “No Drama, No Fights: Cool Ways to Handle Conflict.” The expected outcomes of this interactive seminar include students identifying conflict triggers and how to avoid them, mastering emotional regulation techniques, enhancing empathy, and committing to maintaining a safe school environment.

Meanwhile, the teacher workshop carried the theme “Creating Safe Spaces in Schools.” The aim of the activity was to equip teachers with the ability to identify early signs of violence and carry out appropriate interventions, strengthen relationships with students to foster safe environments, implement de-escalation strategies, and develop school-based violence prevention action plans.

The series of events was led by Kanaka Foundation facilitator Yudo H.B. Timtim, and supported by STM’s Community Development team. The methods used in both the student seminar and teacher workshop included interactive discussions and case studies, mindfulness and relaxation exercises, conflict resolution simulations, and the development of follow-up action plans. Importantly, the sessions also included a declaration of anti-violence commitment from participants.

STM Community Development team member Vovia Witni stated that the role of parents and educators is crucial in supporting students’ growth. “We see the need for character development among the younger generation, particularly children—how they can recognize their own emotions to avoid becoming bullies either at school or in the community,” she said.

Witni added that STM continues to identify educational needs in Dompu Regency, aligning with government educational plans. To date, STM has carried out various education support programs from early childhood education (PAUD) to higher education, including technical and non-technical training, scholarships, and support for teaching and learning facilities.

The seminar and workshop were warmly welcomed by participants. Ummul Khairat, S.Pd., a teacher at SMPN 1 Hu’u, said that the workshop facilitated by STM helped her better understand her students. “This is a basic need for us as teachers—to understand the psychology of our students. Our grasp of psychology is still limited, especially since, as human beings, we can be emotionally affected by our environment,” she expressed.

Drs. H. Rifaid, M.Pd., Head of the Dompu Regency Office of Education, Youth, and Sports (Dikpora), acknowledged that violence in schools can be influenced by problems outside of school. According to him, the student seminar and teacher workshop facilitated by STM are expected to serve as a teaching model to create violence-free schools, which can also be applied in other schools across Dompu Regency.

“The presence of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining has greatly supported us in preparing teachers in Hu’u Subdistrict and surrounding areas to develop best practices that can be shared with other teachers throughout Dompu Regency,” said Rifaid.

Onto Deposit Discovery Team Wins PDAC Thayer Lindsley Award 2025

Toronto, March 7, 2025 — The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), a leading global mineral exploration and development community, has awarded the 2025 Thayer Lindsley Award to the Onto Deposit Discovery Team. This award is given to individuals or exploration teams who have made a significant discovery with economic feasibility potential. The Onto Deposit Discovery Team consists of experts from PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), Vale Exploration Pty Ltd, and PT Vale Eksplorasi Indonesia.

Since the discovery of the Onto Deposit in 2013, in-depth studies and further exploration have been carried out by PT Sumbawa Timur Mining, known as the Hu’u Project. This world-class copper–gold deposit has an estimated resource of approximately 2.1 billion tonnes, with each tonne containing 0.86% copper (Cu) and 0.48 grams of gold (Au). The economic significance of the Onto Deposit, combined with its technical challenges and the innovative exploration methods used, led to the team being recognized for their contribution to the global mining industry.

On its official website, PDAC stated that the Onto Deposit is an extraordinary “blind mineral discovery.” The discovery was made in a densely forested mountainous area with no surface mineralization, through deep drilling (holes up to 800 meters) following mapping, river sediment and soil sampling, and airborne geophysical surveys (LiDAR, magnetic, and radiometric). The deposit is located 500 meters below the surface, hidden beneath a layer of unmineralized volcanic rock.

The award was presented on March 4, 2025, during the PDAC Awards Gala & Nite Cap event held in Toronto, Canada. This event honors outstanding achievements in the global mineral exploration and mining industry. STM Mini Kiosk Support Develops the Dried Fish Business of Jala Residents

Dompu, 13 September 2024— The mini kiosk assistance from PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) for residents of Jala Village, Hu’u Subdistrict, Dompu Regency, has an impact on economic improvement. One of the beneficiaries, Fatimah, uses the mini kiosk to open a dried fish business in her yard. She admitted that STM’s Village Participation Program (PPD) in 2023 was able to increase the amount of her daily income.

Fatimah has been selling dried fish for a long time to help her husband fulfill the family’s needs. According to her, the mini kiosk assistance from STM makes it easier to store and market products. Fatimah’s business has grown and she has customers up to Mataram City and Bima City. She even supplies dried fish for consumption at the Dompu Correctional Institution (Lapas).

Previously, the dried fish produced by Fatimah was only stored on simple boards and bamboo. The appearance was not very attractive and not many potential buyers saw it. This changed after Fatimah was noticed by STM’s Community Development team. She said that the sales potential of her products is getting better. People are getting to know her business more easily.

“There were three stalls given to dried fish sellers in Jala in 2023. Among the beneficiaries, I was the only one who kept the front and displayed the fish like that. Many buyers pass by and stop by. They say it’s much neater and nicer,” said Fatimah on the sidelines of her activities.

After receiving the mini kiosk, Fatimah no longer has to move her fish inside the house, but simply closes it in the afternoon and opens it in the morning. She has been doing this for almost a year. Through STM’s support, Fatimah’s income is capable of reaching the range of Rp500,000-Rp1,000,000 per day compared to the previous level.

To fulfill consumer demand, Fatimah does not work alone. She works in partnership with fisherwomen in Jala Village. Fatimah said that they always provide the best products that are favored by customers. She said that the mini kiosks indirectly benefit the local fisherwomen as they are able to increase the absorption of their fish catch.

According to Fatimah, working with fisherwomen is a mutually beneficial relationship. “I am also the wife of a fisherman. I can feel that this business benefits us to help with household needs. In addition, I also have four small children who need more attention. I can’t fulfill customer demand by myself, so I need the help of the fisherwomen,” she explained.

STM’s Community Relations Manager Ulya Defretes, who was met during the Jala Village clean-up activity, expressed her gratitude that the company’s assistance could benefit the residents. “We are very happy to see that STM’s support can be used and benefited by the residents. This assistance is a form of the company’s concern for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) around the company’s work area,” he said.

PPD is one of the programs run by STM for villages around the company’s working area. This program has been running for a long time and continues to expand its beneficiaries. The program is the result of the residents’ proposals that are determined in the village deliberation with the local village government. Besides the economic sector, PPD also targets empowerment in the fields of health and education.

Community empowerment is an integral part of the development of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining’s project. Learn more about our other programs here.

STM Women Inclusive Program: Showcasing the New Face of the Mining Industry

Jakarta, September 12, 2023— The mining industry is known for its harsh and potentially dangerous working environment. This condition sticks with the widespread “mining is the men’s world” stereotype; creating a masculine and gender-biased work culture that prevents women from entering or developing. The opinion of some people who doubt women’s technical and scientific abilities also worsens the situation-not to mention the lack of facilities for women workers. Consequently, women are often overlooked for career opportunities in the industry.

Research from McKinsey & Company shows that women only make up around 8-17 percent of the total labor force in the mining industry worldwide. This figure reflects a significant imbalance when compared to other sectors. The main causes of women’s low participation in this sector are gender stereotypes, lack of support from company policies, and an unfriendly working environment for women.

According to the same institution, companies that are more inclusive and have better gender diversity tend to perform better financially. Gender diversity can increase innovation, creativity, and better decision-making at all levels of the organization. In this regard, PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) is on the right path with its inclusive women program.

STM is committed to nurturing diversity by implementing policies and programs that support the growth of female workers. STM ensures that workplace facilities, including changing rooms, toilets, and nursing rooms, are available and comfortable for female workers. Additionally, STM enforces strict policies against discrimination and harassment in the workplace, provides reporting channels for unethical actions, and offers insights on integrity and inclusivity to all employees.

Currently, female workers at STM make up 25 percent of the total number of employees—higher than the global mining industry average. To ensure diversity is maintained, STM implements gender-neutral recruitment and provides equal competition opportunities for all its employees in career development. Training and career development programs are available regardless of gender, aimed at helping women have the same opportunities as their male colleagues in exploring their potential and developing their managerial and leadership skills.

Through these initiatives, STM strives to create a fair and supportive work environment for all employees, with the long-term goal of increasing the participation and representation of women in the mining industry. To strengthen this commitment, STM also provides opportunities for competent female workers to take on leadership roles. The percentage of women in leadership positions at STM currently stands at 30 percent.

STM provides space for women workers to develop themselves through various trainings.

    -Aziza Hasna, HR Deparment.

One of STM’s women workers at the Hu’u Project, Aziza Hasna, says that she can work with a sense of security because the company pays close attention to employee safety. “STM has a good work culture with the Golden Rules as a guide for every employee, not just women workers, but for all employees. This makes us feel protected and safe at work,” said the Human Resources Department team member.

Moreover, she said that STM provides space for women workers to develop themselves through various trainings. Some time ago, she attended a business ethics training held in Jakarta. In addition, there are still various other types of training that can be utilized to develop self-potential, which is tailored to the interests and talents of each employee. “That’s one of the facilities to support women who work at STM,” said Aziza.

STM demonstrates its strong commitment to create an inclusive work environment and support women workers through these initiatives. Supportive policies towards women workers are believed to not only strengthen gender equality and equity but also improve performance and innovation in the company. By providing full support to women workers, STM strives to set an example for the rest of the mining industry in terms of inclusivity and diversity.

The Journey of Kancira Daha in Preserving Muna Pa’a Weaving Crafts

Dompu, August 29, 2024— Aging doesn’t make Siti Nursa’s hands lose rhythm. Her fingers are agile in arranging the colored strings on the wooden loom. Her eyes are sharp to ensure that each strand of string is positioned to form a pattern. After a series of complicated and time-consuming traditional weavings, the Muna Pa’a, which has become the pride of the Dompu people, is ready.

Muna Pa’a is the authentic weaving of Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. During the sultanate period, the sultans and nobles of Dompu used this cloth to show their regal status. The valuable historical value of this three-dimensional patterned fabric led to its designation as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia in 2023.

The designation has made the spirit of preserving the Muna Pa’a cultural heritage even more resounding in Dompu Regency. Kancira Daha, a weaving group from the Hu’u sub-district, plays a role. The group of six women continues to develop its capacity to contribute to cultural preservation while improving the local economy.

Siti Nursa (60) is the leader of the Kancira Daha weaving group. According to her, before the group was formed, the women in her village used to weave cloth for personal use. They made Nggoli weaving, which is typical of the Mbojo tribe, from Bima and Dompu, and also fabrics with simple motifs. Their shared interest made them work in groups. The name Kancira Daha itself comes from the name of the local sub-village and village.

Nursa explained that this group runs independently with full limitations. To improve the quality of their weaving, they needed adequate facilities or intensive mentoring. However, things improved when PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), a company conducting copper exploration in Hu’u Sub-district, paid more attention to the Kancira Daha weaving group in 2022.

STM has provided a lot of support since the mentoring began. The company opened our knowledge about the weaving business, increased promotion, and facilitated market access. We also received mentoring with woven fabric production equipment and display cases to store our products.

Nursa added that among all these supports, she is most grateful for the company’s willingness to teach the Kancira Daha weaving group to make Muna Pa’a cloth. Nursa and her partners are familiar with Muna Pa’a and know that this type of weaving is one of Dompu’s cultural heritages, but they need to be used to making it. Nursa said that the technique and pattern of making Muna Pa’a are different from the woven fabrics she usually makes.

Nursa (left) and Kancira Daha weaving group member, Samsiah, show one  of their weavings.

“So far, we have only heard and seen about Muna Pa’a weaving. It is said that this weaving has existed since the sultanate era. We just learned to make Muna Pa’a with the STM mentoring program. This is different from the weaving we usually make because there are more creations and we have to be more careful,” said Nursa.

While it took some adapting, slowly but surely, the Kancira Daha weaving group was able to produce its own Muna Pa’a cloth. The time required for a weaver to make a one-meter Muna Pa’a cloth is 14 days at most. This takes twice as long as ordinary woven fabrics. However, the group members claim to enjoy every process.

From an economic perspective, the Muna Pa’a weaving craft can provide additional income for Kancira Daha members, some of whom work as vegetable farmers. The price of a one-meter Muna Pa’a cloth is around Rp600,000. “The mentoring by STM has improved our ability to make traditional fabrics and helped us to realize economic independence,” said Nursa.

Since being mentored by STM, Kancira Daha and its products have become more widely known. The group was facilitated to connect with the Cooperatives and SMEs Office and the Industry and Trade Office of Dompu Regency for better business development. In addition, Kancira Daha also participated in local business exhibitions, such as the Dompu Expo with STM, in June 2024 and is likely to be involved in other larger exhibitions.

“Alhamdulillah, our products are increasingly recognized. We have made 22 Muna Pa’a orders for government offices, including those used by the Regent of Dompu Regency and his wife. We also collaborate with tourism entrepreneurs at Lakey Hu’u Beach to make souvenirs. Also, various orders are coming from STM for domestic and foreign purposes,” Nursa explained.

Nursa and the Kancira Daha weaving group members greatly appreciate the community empowerment program initiated by STM in the economic field. The program contributes to preserving traditional fabrics in Dompu Regency, especially the Muna Pa’a weaving. The program also allows the women of Daha Village to strengthen the family economy.

“The support from STM means a lot to us, and hopefully, more parties will care about the development of MSMEs. We hope that this traditional weaving tradition is not only carried out by older people like me but also by the younger generation. This woven fabric must continue to exist and become the hallmark of Dompu Regency,” she said.

Community empowerment is an integral part of the development of PT Sumbawa Timur Mining’s project. Learn more about our other programs here.

PT STM Disseminates 2023 Work Performance and 2024 Work Plan in Hu’u Project

PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), the holder of the Contract of Work for the Hu’u Project (copper mineral exploration project) in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, conducted a series of socialization of mineral performance achievements in 2023 and mineral work plans in 2024 to the Central, Provincial and Regency Governments. The socialization activities began in Mataram, the capital of NTB province on 30 April 2024, continued on 7 May 2024 at the Dompu Regent Hall and closed with a meeting with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jakarta on 13 May 2024. All were attended by regional leaders, relevant agencies and institutions.

“This is our initiative, as a form of information transparency to the government. We hope that STM’s investment and exploration efforts at the Hu’u Project receive full support and can run smoothly,” said Yan Fuadi, STM’s Head of Mining Engineering, on Tuesday (5/7).

    2024 Work Plan

Regarding STM’s 2024 work plan, Yan explained that STM will drill approximately 30 drill holes for the purposes of Area Sterilization, Mine Hydrology, Mine Geotech, Resource and Brown Field Exploration. To support exploration drilling activities this year, STM will utilize 5 units of drilling Rigs, including the use of Horizontal Drilling Rig to support Geotechnical studies.

“This year we will continue the geotechnical & hydrological study to increase the amount of data and sharpen the technical analysis as a continuation program that has been started last year, including the horizontal drilling method that will be carried out to support this geotechnical study,” he said.

The Onto deposits, as these mineral deposits are known, offer technical challenges including geological complexity and deposits located 400-600 meters below the earth’s surface. The depth of the Onto deposits makes underground Block Cave mining the only viable mining method for future production operations. The Onto deposits also intersect with geothermal systems, with temperatures ranging from 80 to 110 degrees Celsius, forcing STM to apply appropriate and sophisticated technology to reduce the temperatures and make it feasible for humans to work underground in the future.

In addition to focusing on Geotechnical and Hydrogeological studies, Yan said STM will also carry out other important activities this year, such as increasing the confidence in Onto’s mineral resources and completing the Brown field and regional exploration program to look for other prospects besides the Onto deposits. There are also other planned exploration support activities to be carried out this year, including drill site preparation and rehabilitation, helicopter activities, supporting infrastructure development, and maintenance of exploration access roads.

    2023 Work Performance

Throughout 2023, PT Sumbawa Timur Mining has conducted engineering (technical) studies in the Pre-Feasibility Study stage. The activities carried out include completing the exploration drilling interval to increase resource confidence, conducting geological, geohydrological (Pumping test hole), geochemical and geotechnical studies by operating 7 rigs in the exploration area.

On the same occasion, STM also conveyed the progress of the preliminary survey and geothermal exploration assignment, with the results showing the potential for electricity generation reaching 60 MW. Yan said, “If it is realized, STM will be the only copper mining company powered by its own geothermal power source. With the support of electricity from renewable energy, it will certainly contribute to efforts to reduce carbon emissions in Indonesia.” STM is currently participating in the limited tender process for WKP Hu’u Daha to obtain a Geothermal License from the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy (EBTKE).

STM also conducts regular and more coordinated environmental management and monitoring, and implements Community Development programs.

Community Relations Manager, Ulya Defretes said that STM also ensures the sustainability of environmental protection activities, mining safety, human resource development, and community development and empowerment. The company will continue its Impactful Community Development activities with three program focuses, namely strategic partnerships, village participation program, as well as donations and sponsorships.

“Some of STM’s flagship empowerment programs in 2023 are cataract surgery and eye examinations with beneficiaries reaching 3,211 patients. There are also 100 scholarships for D1 Heavy Equipment Engineering students, 40 Prestasi Scholarships for Dompu Regency students of various majors, and completion of the basic literacy program for 148 learning citizens,” he said.

Regarding donations and sponsorships, Ulya explained that it is done by considering proposals from residents and the benefits of the program. The community development and empowerment program covers health, education, economic empowerment, institutional, infrastructure, environmental, social and cultural sectors.

“We want to continue to promote the involvement of all stakeholders in our activities and make a positive contribution to regional development in West Nusa Tenggara. We hope that the ongoing cooperation with the local government and the people of West Nusa Tenggara can be even closer to achieve sustainable development,” he ended.

PT Sumbawa Timur Mining and DLHK NTB Sign MoU for Forest Protection

Mataram, 21 February 2024 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) and the West Nusa Tenggara Environmental and Forestry Agency (DLHK NTB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today. The purpose of this MoU is to support and accompany STM in implementing a forest protection program within the Forest Area Utilization Agreement (PPKH) for the period 2024-2025. Currently, STM is conducting mineral exploration in the Dompu Regency, known as the Hu’u Project.

The MoU aims to support STM in fulfilling its responsibilities as the holder of PPKH (Forest Area Utilization Permit) based on Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree Number: SK.708/MENLHK/SETJEN/PLA.0/6/2023.

Sustainability & External Affairs Manager of STM, Razky Akbar, stated, “We extend our gratitude to DLHK NTB for their support and guidance in this matter. Furthermore, we are committed to diligently implementing this forest protection program, and this MoU signifies the synergy between PT STM and DLHK of the NTB Province in preserving the forest, particularly within STM’s operational area and the NTB Province in general.”

The forestry program covered by the MoU includes forest patrols and surveillance in the STM PPKH area, forestry regulation awareness campaigns, wildfire prevention, the NTB Green program, installation of forestry information boards, as well as assistance and supervision of STM’s forestry programs.

The MoU signing was attended by representatives from DLHK NTB, the Department of Sustainability, and Government Relations at PT STM. The event concluded with the endorsement of the MoU between the Morowali and Toffo Pajo Soromandi (Topaso) Forest Area Strengthening Agency (BPKH).

Forest Management in the STM PPKH Area

STM has been the holder of PPKH since 2010. PPKH is essential as it grants permission to enter forest areas for mineral exploration activities. The goal is to strike a balance between forest conservation and development. “Striving for a balance between forest conservation and operational mineral mining development is one of our primary goals. As a result, we have implemented a series of sustainable forestry management practices with a comprehensive approach since acquiring the Forest Area Utilization Agreement (PPKH),” explained Razky. This forestry management encompasses land opening planning, tree management system implementation, forest seedling care, post-land opening rehabilitation, and reclamation activities.

Over the past 5 years, the post-land opening rehabilitation and reclamation efforts have successfully planted over 13,500 trees. The planning for these activities begins with technical design documents prepared by STM’s forestry team. These plans serve as a guide to ensure rehabilitation objectives are met.

In addition to the forestry management practices, STM conducts routine assessments to mitigate the risk of fallen trees among mature plants within work areas or near supporting facilities. The physical strength of trees is influenced by factors such as age, damage caused by pests and genetics, and weaknesses in internal stem structures. This means that trees may not be as robust as they appear. STM utilizes a resistograph to provide comprehensive information about tree conditions. This tool can detect internal damage without the need to fell or harm the tree. This information enables STM’s forestry team to evaluate and monitor the condition of trees around the camp and operational facilities.

“May today’s signing of the MoU further enhance STM’s efforts and achievements in managing its PPKH area in tandem with the growth of the Hu’u Project,” concluded Razky.

STM Plants More than 13,500 Trees in the Last 5 Years

A Form of Responsibility for Open Areas

Dompu, 29 November 2023: PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM), the owner of Hu’u Project Contract of Work in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia commemorates the National Tree Planting Day in Indonesia. The highlight of this commemoration was held on Sunday, November 26, 2023 in the Hu’u Project area, Nangadoro Village, Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. The event involved STM employees and contractors, who managed to plant 300 trees.

Apart from the tree planting agenda in the Project area, STM also collaborated with the Dompu Regency Environmental Office (DLH) to celebrate the Tree Planting Day together with the community on November 27, 2023. In this activity, 100 tree seedlings were successfully planted along Jalan Raya Pajo. Quoted from the website of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the determination of Indonesian Tree Planting Day refers to Presidential Decree Number 24 of 2008. The decree signed by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) decided November 28 as Indonesian Tree Planting Day.

STM regularly commemorates Tree Planting Day since 2019, supported by a nursery facility with a capacity of 12,500 seedlings in Wadbura and Nangadoro areas. The nursery facility also supports forest management efforts in exploration area, as explained by Razky Akbar, External Relations & Sustainability Manager of STM. “In the process of developing sustainable mineral mines, proper forestry management is required to minimize the impact on forest areas. Since 2017 to 2023, STM has planted totally 13,525 tree seedlings, covering an area of 68,1356 hectares spread across 97 locations in the Hu’u Project exploration area. All of the planting aim to revegetate and rehabilitate forests or open land used by exploration drilling that is no longer in use. The trees are also to replace trees in other areas that may be affected,” said Razky.

In general, planting trees is useful for anticipating global climate change, preventing a decrease in environmental carrying capacity, overcoming deforestation, and preventing other environmental damage which results in a decrease in natural productivity and environmental sustainability.

All the participants joining the national Tree Planting Day held by STM seemed enthusiastic. Razky hopes that the involvement of all employees and contractors will inspire good habits. “We hope that the consistent steps we take will provide a good legacy for future generations, as well as fostering an awareness of love for the environment inside all of us,” he said.

    STM Forestry Management

Razky said further that efforts to minimize impacts on forest areas during the construction of mining operations are not only carried out by planting trees, but by adopting sustainable forestry management practices through a comprehensive approach implementation. Forestry management includes land clearing planning, implementing tree management system, caring for forest plant seeds, post-land clearing rehabilitation, and reclamation activities.

STM always strives to return open areas and areas that are no longer used for exploration to their original condition by routinely carrying out rehabilitation, reclamation and revegetation activities as part of this commitment. Planning for these activities begins with a technical design document, prepared by the STM forestry team. This plan then serves as a guide to ensure that rehabilitation goals are well-achieved.

STM collaborates with the Toffo Pajo Soromandi Forest Management Unit (KPH TOPASO) in protecting the forest area of the STM PPKH area. This form of cooperation is stated in the MoU which contains forestry management activities, such as patrolling and guarding mineral and Ex-geothermal PPKH forestry gates, assisting in preventing forest fires, developing forest honey cultivation, and succeeding the Green NTB program. Apart from guarding the PPKH STM area, STM also supports guarding the forest area around the RTK 65 area. KPH TOPASO also helps in providing outreach and assistance to the community regarding the management and guarding of forest areas.

In addition to the above activities of forestry management, STM also carries out routine assessments as a form of mitigating the risk of trees falling on mature plants in work areas or around supporting facilities. A tree’s physical strength is influenced by several factors including age, damage caused by pests and genetics, and weak internal trunk structure. This means that the tree may not be as strong as it seems. STM uses a resistograph to provide comprehensive information about the condition of the tree. This tool can show whether there is internal damage without having to cut or damage the tree. This information allows the STM forestry team to evaluate and monitor the condition of trees around camps and operational facilities.

All forestry management efforts undertaken by STM are solely to ensure that forest preservation can be taken up side by side with the development of mining operations.

While these measures are in line with a comprehensive approach to maintaining water quality, a long-term assessment of the Hu’u Project’s water vulnerability was also conducted and this will inform the development of a more in-depth clean water support program.

In terms of air quality management and monitoring, PT STM has undertaken several measures such as irrigating the helipad area, routinely maintaining emissions from operational equipment and vehicles, and undertaking necessary dust abatement measures. PT STM also regularly monitors and measures the concentration of air pollutants such as heavy metals and particulate matter generated by exploration activities to maintain air quality in accordance with recognized environmental standards.

The native flora and fauna of the Hu’u Project are also important for their benefits to the local community. To ensure minimal impacts of mining activities on flora and fauna, PT STM has a rigorous program to mitigate the impacts of land clearing and reclamation by preserving topsoil during these activities and using the preserved topsoil as part of the revegetation process. The success of soil rehabilitation and revegetation is constantly monitored, including the use of surveillance cameras within rehabilitation areas to ensure activities do not impact animal life in the project area.

Evans said, “As we plan to develop the Hu’u Project into a world-class copper mine, we recognize the need to apply strict environmental measures and standards in all that we do.  This includes applying best practices and doing the things we should be doing, even if they are not required by law. We are grateful that our efforts to protect the environment at the Hu’u Project have been recognized by relevant agencies such as the West Nusa Tenggara Energy and Mineral Resources Agency, the Dompu Environmental Agency, and the Bima Environmental Agency.”

Dompu, 23 March 2023 – PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) provided assistance to fulfill the clean water needs of residents of Marada Village, Hu’u District in the form of water well and facilitation of the formation of clean water management institutions so that the availability of clean water for residents can be managed properly and sustainably.

The handover of the clean water facilities was conducted by Didit Susiyanto, representing the management of STM, to the District Chief of Hu’u, Muhammad Iswan, SKM at the borehole location in Ompu Mbeka Hamlet, Marada Village, Hu’u District, on Wednesday (22/3/2023). Also present were the Head of Marada Village, Abdullah Idris, the Clean Water Manager of Marada Village, Sudirman, along with local youth leaders and residents.

Didit Susiyanto stated that the handover of the clean water well facility is a manifestation of STM’s commitment to growing and developing alongside the community through its empowerment programs.

“We hope that the clean water well facilities can address the issue of clean water access for the residents of Marada Village. Now, water is readily available, and the infrastructure is in place. In the past, people might have had to travel quite a distance to collect water, but now it is distributed to their homes,” he said.

He expressed hope that through the construction of these clean water facilities, the community can show their support for the presence of STM, enabling the company to further empower the local residents and utilize the shared potential.

Meanwhile, Hu’u District Head Muhammad Iswan, SKM welcomed the handover of clean water facilities to the residents of Marada Village and stated that STM has made a significant contribution to the empowerment and development of Hu’u in various areas.

“PT STM’s contribution to health, education, empowerment, and public facilities has been quite a lot done by PT STM. Likewise in the field of agriculture with environmentally friendly plants (organic plants). I even participated in the harvest together in Daha yesterday,” he said.

Head of Marada Village, Abdullah Idris, on the other hand, expressed his gratitude and thanks because STM’s assistance has made clean water accessible to the residents. The water is now directly distributed to each household, which is a form of care by the company after witnessing the difficulties the Marada residents faced with clean water following the damage to the water source pipes during the floods in early 2021.

He also urged the residents to continue supporting STM so that it can continue its activities and empowerment programs. “In Marada, there is no more water scarcity. This is extraordinary. Unlike before, where one water tank was shared by the entire village,” he said.

The clean water provided by STM is managed by the Marada Village government through an institution established by the village government. The water is directly supplied to the residents’ homes and is equipped with water meters. Residents are charged Rp. 20,000 per household (KK) for maintenance and incentives for the staff. This cost is much lower than when based on water consumption.
